Construction Trade Fair Exhibitor Lists: Distributors and Projects

How building product suppliers use exhibitor lists from BAU, The Big 5 and other fairs to reach distributors and project partners, with CE and UKCA notes.

Industry 8 min read

A construction trade fair exhibitor list is a good starting point for a building products supplier looking for distributors, merchants and project partners in a new market. Most exhibitors are manufacturers and system suppliers; contractors usually visit. This guide covers whom to target, the leading fairs and a working plan.

Our directory currently holds 108 upcoming construction and building fairs with confirmed dates, 3 of them with a ready exhibitor list. The table below is generated from live data and shows fairs with a ready list first. The full calendar by date is on the construction trade fairs page.

Whom should you target when selling building products?

In construction the buying decision is shared: an architect or engineer specifies the product, a contractor buys it, and a distributor stocks and delivers it. Use the list knowing which link of that chain you are reaching.

Distributor / merchant
Stocks materials and supplies sites and installers. Uses fairs to add brands and product groups.
Specifier
Architecture and engineering practices. They write the product into the specification; they decide but do not buy.
Contractor
Builds the project. Looks at price, lead time and compliance with the specification.
System supplier
Manufacturer of complete systems such as facades, roofing or insulation. Sources components and contract manufacturing.
Declaration of performance
The EU document stating a construction product's essential characteristics (DoP); the basis for CE marking.

Which construction trade fairs matter most?

The details below come from the organisers' websites; dates appear only in the live table and on the fair pages.

Trade fairLocation, cycle and focus
BAUMunich, Messe München. Every two years in odd years, in January; architecture, materials and systems. One of the largest building fairs in Europe.
The Big 5 (Big 5 Global)Dubai, Dubai World Trade Centre, every year; run by dmg events. Construction fair for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia; trade visitors only.

BAU brings together Europe's manufacturers and system suppliers, which suits suppliers of components and products for European distributors. At The Big 5, the region's importers, trading houses and contractors are more visible, which suits project sales and regional distribution.

How do product approvals decide the target market?

  • European Union: construction products covered by a harmonised standard are sold with a declaration of performance and CE marking under the Construction Products Regulation.
  • Great Britain: the UKCA mark applies under British rules, and CE marking is also accepted; check the current government guidance before you start.
  • Gulf states: conformity requirements differ by country; check the national standards body and your trade office.
  • Project specifications: large projects ask for test reports on fire behaviour, thermal performance or strength. Keep the list of reports in your technical data sheet.
  • Freight: for heavy or bulky materials, freight can be a large share of the price, so nearby markets and distributors with a regional warehouse come first.

How should you work through a construction fair list?

  • Six to eight weeks before: open the list in your account and put distributors, system suppliers and competing manufacturers into separate groups.
  • Three to four weeks before: request meetings with distributors and system suppliers. See our meeting request templates.
  • Fair week: bring technical data sheets, certificates and reference projects, and samples if they travel well.
  • Afterwards: send the offer and technical file within a week. Construction decisions take time, so writing again three or four months later with a new project is normal. Our guide on following up after a trade fair covers the details.

These time frames are rough practical guidance, not measured figures.

In Expomatik the list is opened in your account and campaigns go to each company's general business address. Opens are not tracked; replies are the measure. The price of a list is shown before you open it; current prices are on Pricing.

What should a first message to a building materials distributor look like?

Example message

Subject: Before BAU: CE-marked porcelain tiles, looking for a regional distributor

Hello, could you forward this to your purchasing or product manager? We manufacture indoor and outdoor porcelain tiles; our products are CE marked, and declarations of performance and test reports are ready. We are looking for a distributor with stock in your region. Would you have 20 minutes during BAU? We can send the technical data sheet beforehand.

Kind regards, name, company, phone

The product in the example is a placeholder; use your own facts. Never claim a certificate you do not hold or a lead time you cannot meet.

What are the legal points to check?

Rules for marketing emails depend on the recipient's country: the UK allows emails to corporate addresses with a clear sender and an opt-out, while Germany requires prior consent even for businesses. Frequently asked questions

Are contractors on a construction fair exhibitor list?
Mostly not. Contractors tend to visit construction fairs, while exhibitors are mainly manufacturers, system suppliers and distributors. The realistic route to contractors is the distributors and merchants who supply their sites. At Gulf fairs, trading and contracting companies also exhibit.
Do I need a CE mark to sell building products in the EU?
Construction products covered by a harmonised standard need a declaration of performance and CE marking to be placed on the EU market. Great Britain uses the UKCA mark alongside CE under its own rules. Check whether your product is covered before writing to European distributors.
Who receives an email sent from Expomatik?
Campaigns go to each company's general business address. There is no targeting of named decision makers, so ask for the message to be forwarded to purchasing or product management.
